Policy in the Diocese of Phoenix calls specifically for completion of an annual safe-environment training by all members of the clergy, all other members of parish staffs, and all volunteers who directly serve children, adolescents or vulnerable adults. All other parish volunteers are required to complete a safe-environment education module on an 'every other year' basis. The Foundation Called to Protect education program must be taken first. The new Called to Protect 2: Our Continued Commitment module would come next, ideally about one year after completion of Called to Protect Foundation.

Called To Protect™ for Ministries

In this program Clergy, employees, and volunteers learn myths and facts about sexual abuse and sexual offenders. They learn detailed warning signs to watch for in adults who may abuse, and how to identify children who may have been abused. Clergy, employees, and volunteers learn specific steps to take in screening, guidelines for interaction, monitoring, training and responding. To keep ministries safe, standards must be met in parishes, schools, youth events — anywhere there are children.

2010 - 2011 Schedule

  • Thursday, August 19, 6 to 9 pm
  • Saturday, September 11, 9 am to noon
  • Tuesday, January 4, 6 to 9 pm
  • Wednesday, March 2, 6 to 9 pm

Called to Protect™ Renewal

This renewal session should be completed after a person has attended the foundation Called to Protect session. This educational session takes a closer look at three potential threats youth may encounter while using the internet; pornography, online predators, and cyber bullying. In addition, this session will review Arizona mandatory reporting law.

The options to take part in the Called to Protect Renewal at Saint Andrew the Apostle include:

  1. DVD-based group session — about one-hour in length.
  2. Individual viewing of DVD-based module — at the parish office, about one-hour in length.
  3. Online format called  — about one-hour in length and can be completed on your personal PC or at the parish office.

Those parish volunteers at St. Andrew the Apostle who are required to do an annual Called To Protect module (and who have completed the basic Called to Protect) should complete one of these options.

Individual DVD Viewing at the Parish Office

To choose this format, contact Mary Huffman (480.899.1990, ext. 115).

Online Renewal

Contact Mary Huffman. She can provide details on how to complete this option, via the Diocese of Phoenix website, from your personal PC or at the parish.

A child's safety is our responsibility, since they have been entrusted to us. For this reason we must continue to renew our commitment to prevent child abuse.
