Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Avis Bogumill
Early Childhood Catechist

(480) 899-1990

This is a profound spiritual method of religious formation for young children from 3 to 5 years of age. It facilitates the child's basic need and capacity to enjoy the presence of God through presentations and works rooted in Sacred Scripture, Liturgy, and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The Catechesis is based on the conviction that God and the child are in relationship. We believe that the growth of this relationship is directed by the Spirit of God already within the child and that each child has a deep need to experience God's presence in their lives and a special capacity to enjoy that presence.

A key component in the Catechesis is the specially prepared environment, the Atrium, which is child-sized and beautiful. The Atrium is outfitted with shelving containing materials for the children's meditative work, and centers of religious activity, for example, a miniature altar table.

The children attend one 1.5 hour session per week from September through May. Sessions are available in the morning and early afternoon. Parishioners are needed as Aids to the Catechists. Training is available.
